Open call: Support for newcomer talents
The Goethe-Institut is offering financial support to emerging talent to facilitate their first international experiences in theatre and dance. This initiative is aimed at artists based in Germany who are active in the fields of theatre or dance and are considered professional newcomers. It is intended for those invited to present guest performances in non-German-speaking countries.
- Applications must be submitted by the artists themselves and should arrive no later than seven weeks before the end of the current quarter for consideration in the following quarter.
Scope of funding
Only travel and transportation costs are eligible for support under this scheme.
Eligibility and funding criteria
- Applicants (individual artists or ensembles) must be professional but still in the early stages of their careers. This includes students in the later stages of theatre school as well as artists with several years of experience. Each artist may receive funding a maximum of two times.
- Applicants are encouraged to prioritise sustainable transport options. For travel durations of up to seven hours or distances of 600 km or less, rail travel is preferred. The Goethe-Institut will consider covering any additional costs incurred as a result of choosing sustainable travel over air travel.
- No travel or accommodation bookings should be made prior to applying. Projects involving already-booked travel cannot generally be funded.
- Travel to German-speaking countries is not eligible for support.
Required documents
- Applicants must submit the following:
- A description of the invited production.
- An official invitation from the hosting organisation.
- Applicant’s personal and professional information, including complete contact details.
- A detailed budget including income, expenses, and any pending or secured grants (please clearly indicate whether funding has been requested or confirmed).
- If applying for travel cost coverage: two comparative quotes from travel agencies, rail providers, or freight companies.
- For air travel: a quote highlighting the option with the lowest CO₂ emissions.
- An indication of whether this is the first or second application for this funding opportunity.
- If successful: banking details including IBAN and SWIFT code, and the account holder’s name.
Application process
Applications must be submitted by the artists themselves and should arrive no later than seven weeks before the end of the current quarter for consideration in the following quarter. Late applications may be declined for formal reasons.
Note: if any bookings (e.g. flights) have already been made, the project will not be eligible for funding. To proceed under such circumstances, applicants must first request informal approval for an early start of measures via email. This approval does not constitute a binding funding commitment.
Following the receipt of funding, an artist is not eligible to apply for further support for a period of one calendar year.
Upcoming deadline
Applications must be received at least seven weeks before the end of the previous quarter in order to be considered for the following quarter.
