YouTube Music introduces lyric sharing feature to rivals Spotify, Apple Music
Google is continuing its efforts to bridge the feature gap between YouTube Music and its leading competitors Spotify and Apple Music. The latest update introduces a long-awaited feature: the ability to share song lyrics directly from the YouTube Music app.
- The new lyric sharing tool becomes available when users are on the “Lyrics” tab of a currently playing track.
Lyric sharing has been available on both Spotify and Apple Music for some time, allowing users to post highlighted lyrics on social media platforms and elsewhere. This functionality not only enhances music discovery, particularly among the followers of online influencers, but also helps raise brand visibility for the streaming service itself. YouTube Music appears to be following Spotify’s lead by including branding on shared lyrics.
How to share lyrics on YouTube Music
The new lyric sharing tool becomes available when users are on the “Lyrics” tab of a currently playing track. A newly added “Share” button enables users to select specific lines of text. After making a selection, tapping “Next” brings up a customisation screen where users can change the background colour and preview the share card as it will appear on social media.
The final share card includes the song title, artist, album artwork, and a small YouTube Music logo. Users can then post the card directly to platforms such as Instagram, save it as an image to their device’s gallery, or share it through other supported apps.
The feature appears to be rolling out via a server-side update, meaning it may not yet be available to all users. According to a Reddit user who first spotted the update, their version of the YouTube Music app is 8.15.51 on Android.
Lyric sharing supports what’s known as “fan-led streaming”, one of the three primary avenues for music discovery, alongside editorial curation and algorithmic recommendations. By enabling users to share meaningful lines from songs, YouTube Music is fostering new, organic opportunities for artists to reach wider audiences.
Now, YouTube Music listeners can join the lyric-sharing trend and help drive discovery—one line at a time.
