Ugandan rapper Mulekwa Nampeera dies

Fellow rapper St Nelly-Sade confirmed his death on Twitter. “Sad news for UG hip hop! Rest in Paradise Mulekwa, May the almighty Lord judge your soul with mercy,” he wrote.

Condolences to Nampeera’s family and friends began pouring in on social media shortly after the musician’s death.

“Am deeply saddened by the news that we have lost Nampeera Mulekwa. I extend my deepest sympathies to the family, friends and the entire hip hop fraternity. May his soul rest In eternal peace bro, his music will always live on. #RestWell #RipMulekwaNampeera,” Ugandan rapper JK Lubanto wrote on Twitter. 

"It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we received the news of his death,” Uganda luga flow rapper Lady Slyke told Music In Africa. We would like to thank all the doctors for their support and his fans for their prayers.

"He was a good lyricist and brilliant storyteller. During his career, I witnessed him inspire many rappers through mentorship sessions. There is no doubt that we will miss him. May his soul rest in peace.”

Lady Slyke said Nampeera’s death came at a time when a group of Ugandan artists were planning to hold a fundraising concert to pay for his chemotherapy.  

“His record label HiPipo has been funding his cancer treatment for the past six months. But we needed assurance that he was getting the best treatment so other rappers and I were going to hold a benefit concert but he left us so soon,” she said.

Sylvester Kabombo said: "He must have started music in the early 1990s because by the time we met in the early 2000s, he had already made some recordings. Since then, we did many shows and projects together. Apart from being a great talent, he was a great human being. Love and prayers to his family and friends."

Nampeera released songs such as ‘Byawongo’, ‘Abaana Bano’, ‘Bukokola’ and ‘Ebikolwa Byange’, among many others.
