Call for entries: Democracy song competition

The Brenthurst Foundation is a South African think tank established by the Oppenheimer family in 2004. It brings together scholars, politicos, thought leaders and captains of industry to consider strategies of enhancing the continent's economic growth and development.

The winning songs will be featured royalty-free in a compilation CD, which will be handed out free of charge during the launch of a new book titled Democracy Works: Rewriting Politics to Africa's Advantage. The book, which will be published next year, is co-authored by Brenthurst Foundation director Greg Mills, former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, former Zimbabwe minister of finance Tendai Biti and American political scientist Jeffrey Herbst.  

The winning entry, along with four runners-up, will receive $2 000 and $500 respectively.

The deadline for submissions is 25 December 2018. Successful artists will be notified by 15 January and the prize money paid to their bank accounts by 15 February 2019.

Requirements

Applicants should consider the following:

• The song should be in digital WAV format and not longer than four minutes and thirty seconds.
• The songs must reinforce the importance of democracy in Africa.

Note that the winner and runners-up may be invited to perform their song at various launch events for the book.
