Uganda’s Open Mic Festival returns this weekend
This year’s Christmas edition of the Open Mic Festival will take place at Acholi Inn Hotel in Kampala, Uganda, on 15 December 2018.
The event will offer the public a wide variety of collaborative programmes such as poetry, comedy, a fashion show and musical performances.
The Open Mic Festival has been organised by Uganda Breweries and will host performances by Suzan Kerunen, Cindy Sanyu, Charles Obina, Daniel Omara, Otim Alpha and several upcoming artists such as Eezzy and Sulaiman Djembe Fola, among others.
“The organisers are looking at meeting all needs of their clients by engaging these different elements of art to create a whole day's experience,” Kerunen told Music In Africa. `
She said the organisers were working around the clock to put together a memorable show and that she was glad to share the stage with other talented Ugandan artists representing a variety of genres.
“I cannot wait to tell my stories accompanied with great folk music and rhythms, and create the right experience for the audience,” Kerunen said.
Kerunen also encouraged musicians to grab networking opportunities, be it at local shows or at music industry events. Last month, she was among the 11 bands selected to showcase at the Music In Africa Conference for Collaborations, Exchange and Showcases (ACCES) in Nairobi, Kenya.
Kerunen said she was able to network and expand her knowledge of the music industry. “ACCES itself is a great platform for artists with lots of opportunities. It was amazing. I loved the showcases, networking sessions and the attention the Kenyan government gave the conference. It goes to show there is a great future for the Kenyan creative industry if such support is coming through,” she said.
