Mafikizolo
Bio
Popular Afro-pop act that draws on the sounds and style of 1950s marabi and kwela, combined with modern kwaito and house. They formed in the late 90s by Theo Kgosinkwe, Nhlanhla Nciza and Tebogo Madingoane. In 1997 they released their self-titled debut album. It was followed by 'Music Revolution' (1999) and 'Gate Crashers' (2000). After narrowly surviving a car accident in December 2001, Mafikizolo released 'Sibongile' (meaning 'we are thankful') in 2002, which sold over 300 000 copies and earned the group Samas for Best Duo/Group and Best Afro-Pop Album in 2003. They were invited to perform all over Southern Africa, as well as the US and UK. The disc features the band’s biggest hit, 'Ngihama Nawe’. It was soon followed by 'Kwela' (2003).
At the height of their powers, tragedy struck in February 2004 when Madingoane was shot dead in an argument. The remaining members decided to keep their name alive, going on release 'Van Toeka Af' (2004) and 'Six Mabone' (2006), both of which earned the group Samas for Best Duo/Group. The group then decided to split, with both members pursuing successful solo careers. Much to relief of their fans all over the African continent, they got back together to release 'Reunited' in 2013.
