Zim president to launch Culture Week tomorrow
The 2019 edition of Culture Week will be launched by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa at Glamis Arena in Harare on 18 May.
The weeklong programme will run under the theme African Royalty – Our Heritage and will be held in the country’s 10 provinces from 18 to 25 May.
The launch will feature performances from such acts as Alick Macheso, Enzo Ishall, Baba Harare, Stunner, Janet Manyowa and the Zvido Zvevanhu and Ngoma Dzepasi traditional dance groups.
“The programme enables Zimbabwe to reflect on her diversified culture while reminding Zimbabweans of the need to safeguard cultural practices,” National Arts Council of Zimbabwe acting communications and marketing manager Cathrine Mthombeni said.
“Such practices are integral components of the nation’s cultural heritage in both tangible and intangible forms. Culture Week is an opportune time to promote and showcase the diversity of the Zimbabwean culture.
“An array of activities to celebrate cultural diversity are being lined up to ensure that the launch will be spectacular and depict the diverse aesthetic cultural values and norms that define Zimbabweans.”
"The theme is a call to safeguard cultures for posterity via diverse art forms of expression. The uniqueness of Africa’s heritage is akin to royalty which in itself is a birth right.”
The event will also feature exhibitions from such organisations as Music Crossroads, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, the City of Harare, Chitungwiza Arts Centre, the Zimbabwe Association of Theatre and for Children and Young People and the Zimbabwe Musicians Union.
Culture Week is intended to celebrate the importance of cultural diversity in Zimbabwe through various cultural and artistic expressions. The event is part of UNESCO's Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity.
