Goethe-Institut SA to host Women, Music and Media discussion
Goethe-Institut South Africa will host its next Imagination Night in Johannesburg on 26 June.
The event, which will run under the theme Women, Music and Media, will be presented by bass guitarist Tebogo Sedumedi and trombone player Lebogang Pangwa from the HerArtistry organisation, as well as Edward Tsumele from CityLifeArts.
Imagination Night is a platform that seeks to promote the exchange ideas for all budding entrepreneurs in the social and cultural economies.
“Our aim on Imagination Night is to introduce our company HerArtistry to the public," Pangwa told Music In Africa. "This is the first time we will be engaging the public because we are a new company under the Hub at Goethe programme.”
“HerArtistry is an agency that actively seeks to change and alleviate the levels of gender inequality and bias that plague the music industry today. We have taken it upon ourselves to establish a formal structure that will solely focus on gaining work opportunities for women who work in the industry.”
Sedumedi said the event would address the challenges faced by women in music and the media.
“We want people to know the extent to which women are marginalised in the music industry," she said. "There are many challenges such as getting opportunities to work on big events like national awards ceremonies and inaugurations as well as TV and studio productions.
“Even with events that are directed towards women, female musicians are not booked to perform or work as part of those events. There are women in the South African music industry who are professional instrumentalists, songwriters, arrangers, composers, music directors, producers and sound engineers whose works go unseen."
