Red Bull dance champion set to represent SA in Paris
Cape Town‘s Lee-Shane Booysen will represent South Africa in Europe after winning the 2019 Red Bull Dance Your Style national finals in Johannesburg's Newtown Music Factory on Saturday.
Booysen outperformed 15 other dancers from various regions in SA to secure his spot to compete at the European street dance mecca in Paris, where he will battle it out against 30 street dancers from around the globe.
“This is a big moment for me and I am excited to be the one heading to Paris to represent South Africa," Booysen said." A part of me still cannot believe I have won because I thought the competition at regional level was tough, but the finals were tougher."
After more than 60 events held in more than 30 countries all over the world, the global street dance battle will bring together only the most exceptionally talented dancers to compete at the first-ever world final.
The big decider will take place on 12 October at Grande Halle de la Villette. There's no planned choreography in the one-on-one battles. Dancers will have to thrill the audience by adapting their chosen style to surprising tunes, from recent global hits to old time classics.
The previous Red Bull Dance Your Style winner, Teboho Diphehlo, said: "If you want to win you have to impress the audience.” Booysen will be accompanied by the pantsula-style dancer who won the crowd over with moves that went beyond his trademark in 2018.
Red Bull also wants dance fans to be a part of the Global Red Bull Dance Your Style competition and is giving locals an opportunity to show off their best dance moves and subsequently form part of the longest dance video ever created.
Dancers can submit their videos here. One lucky person will stand a chance to win a trip to the world final in Paris. The competition deadline is 31 August.
