Call for applications: 2020 Nafasi Art Space residency in Tanzania
Nafasi Art Space is calling on artists to apply for its Artist in Residency programme in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, next year.
The residency lasts four weeks and aims to create a critical creative and learning environment to stimulate the discovery and creation of contemporary art in Tanzania, through production and an open and active art exchange within the region and beyond.
Participants will be required to share their expertise through workshops, masterclasses and other skills-exchange methods.
The programme is intended for musicians, painters, sculptors, welders, printmakers, dancers, video artists and photographers as well as writers, curators and researchers. Women are highly encouraged to apply.
"We hope many, many artists from diverse backgrounds and experiences will apply to join us for a residency at Nafasi," Nafasi Art Space director Rebecca Yeong Ae Corey told Music In Africa. "We have seen first-hand how many great moments and relationships have come out of these residencies in the past.
"It's a very competitive process because we only have a few slots for performing artists. We hope the application process will introduce us to the diversity of amazing artists out there who might be interested in sharing their talent and time with our community in Dar es Salaam."
Preference will be given to individuals with multiple knowledge in the performing arts, but if possible the ability to fuse performing and visual arts.
Nafasi’s residency programme has hosted more than 30 artists from 10 countries. Musicians who have previously taken part in the residency programme include Ambasa Mandela (Kenya), Sofia Nzayisenga (Rwanda) and Msafiri Zawose (Tanzania), among many others.
"The residency is critical and beneficial to the local industries, as most musicians in Tanzania do not have formal music education because of lack of training institutions," Nafasi Art Space artists manager Kwame Mchauru said. "Therefore, through the residencies we believe we will have more time for the artists to grasp the knowledge as well as learn from one another properly."
The application deadline is 30 September 2019.
