Watch Coldplay, Femi Kuti and Stromae play Arabesque
Coldplay have released a live video titled ‘Arabesque’ from the British rock band’s latest album Every day Life, featuring Femi Kuti and the Positive Force band in a power combo with Rwandan-Belgian pop star Stromae.
The music video was shot in Amman, Jordan, without an audience and was broadcast live on YouTube on 21 November, featuring jazzy and cyclical Afrobeat sounds all over it.
Femi Kuti’s sax solo comes in around the two-minute mark. The voice of his father Fela rings in the background with the message “music is the weapon of the future” while the Positive Force band introduces a passionate section of horns in what sounds like a musical challenge, leading to a heated crescendo as they play in the Arabian sunrise.
It is a great relief for fans to see Stromae return to the spotlight since the ‘Alors on Danse’ singer put his musical career on hold after suffering severe side effects from the use of anti-malaria medication. He delivers his lines in French and dances in unison with the psychedelic composition.
The track was written by Coldplay, Karnivool guitarist Drew Goddard, Femi Kuti and Stromae, while The Dream Team handled production.
“The album is our reaction to the perceived negativity that is everywhere,” Coldplay frontman Chris Martin said in a BBC Radio 1 interview. “And there is a lot of trouble, but there’s also so much positivity and so much great life happening. So in a way, it’s just trying to make sense of things, saying what we feel and what we see”.
The Jordan recording is in celebration of the official launch of Everyday Life. According to Coldplay, "Jordan was chosen as a venue for its natural beauty, and the historical and cultural importance that characterise the country".
