Bio
Albert Meintjes is an accomplished singer and songwriter from South Africa.
Meintjes began performing in 1996. Albert writes about everyday happenings and the emotions they bring. His stories of love and life make for entertaining if pensive lyrics. He is strongly influenced by folk and acoustic music across the globe, coupled with indigenes rhythms and melodies. He has a deep love for Southern American flavours of music and where they meet African rhythms and these traits are rooted deep in his music.
Albert grew up in a musical family with his parents both recorded gospel artists, his sister Hainley Cole a dance teacher and jazz vocalist and brother Gideon Meintjes, one of SA’s top drummers and performing musicians. At the age of five, Albert was already on stage singing in his school choir which were the runner-up in the Applause national choir competition. In 1997 his music career took him to the rock stages of SA and he soon found himself sharing the spotlight with the cream of SA talent, including bands like Strange Weather, Duusman, the SAMA award winning Not My Dog and the ever so popular Scicoustic of which Albert has been the front man for the past sixteen years. Albert has performed with New Porn alongside Arno Carstens, supporting the Metallica tour. He also shared the stage with some of the top artists in South Africa like Albert Frost, Anton La’mour, Karen Zoid, Greg Georgiades, Valiant Swart, Shaun Morgan (Seether), Hugo De Waal, Lanie van der Walt, Greg Georgiade, Steve Newman, Guy Collins, Gerald Clark, Piet Botha, Gian Groen and Moseu Kettlele just to name a few.
With his unique voice, brilliant song writing and exceptional guitar techniques, Albert has entertained audiences in London, Croatia, Seychelles, Mozambique, Cuba, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Egypt, Belgium, The Netherlands, Nigeria and Kenya, where he was well received all-round. Albert has released two albums with Scicoustic, one album as Algrecko featuring Greg Georgiades and launches his debut solo album ‘The Very Silence of Waiting in this Place' in April 2017. The album was written about Namibia and the special places he visited touring the country in 2016. He performed his Tribute to Koos du Plessis in 2019 - 2020 & his latest hit song, “Freedom”, won him two Global Music Awards in 2020.
