CHIMIDZI MIDZI -JUKWAA ARTS

Chimidzi Midzi is a cultural group performing Mijikenda music from the Kenyan coast. Chimidzi Midzi is a part of Jukwaa Arts.

Jukwaa Arts is a performing arts company based in Mombasa founded in 2015. Over the years we have been performing theatre in Mombasa. Since 2021 we created an intergenerational cultural group , Chimidzi Midzi- Jukwaa Arts to archive Mijikenda music.

The Mijikenda are a native community of the Kenyan coast. The group performs Mijikenda music that was traditional performed during ceremonies like wedding, death, naming and general community celebrations in order to ensure these ceremonial music, dances and costumes are not forgotten.

The group consists of young and older generations, with the elders being the current custodians of these songs and dances and the young being the future custodians. The music is accompanied by percussions like drums, flutes and shakers from the Mijikenda community. The genres of music include Chela, ndaro, Sengenya, Gonda.
