Dimitri & The Scarecrow is musical concept developed by Zimbabwean (Ugandan based) Dimitri D. Kwenda. Conceptually the Scarecrow as a metaphor based on the agrarian system of Zimbabwe as a utility to summarize the people in juxtaposition between governance and survival. Employing poetry, satire and humorist styles, Dimitri addresses a kaleidoscope of matters as an observer, victim, idealist, realist, critic & the privileged. Alternative Hip-Hop is the main genre utilized as the medium of expression for Dimitri & The Scarecrow.
Dimitri D. Kwenda as the name behind Dimitri & The Scarecrow, is known for his lyrical prowess on stage and record. With the dexterity of being capable of being adept in both English and his natural tongue, ChiShona. Beyond being a rapper, he is capable of singing with a four octave vocal range. Behind the scenes, he is a producer with several self produced titles completely composed, conceptualized and written by the artist. Having embarked on his musical journey on the now closed hub of budding talent, The Book Cafe in Zimbabwe, Dimitri & The Scarecrow became synonymous with explosive protest art on the slam poetry, the rock/metal and Hip-Hop scenes. This earned him podium finishes in poetry scenes and a stage appearances at Shoko Festival, Grahamstown Counter Festival, Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) intimate venues in Dublin, Kampala, Nairobi, Zanzibar & Cape Town. This has lead to a steady following which has grown steadily over the years since the inception of the concept in 2012.
Dimitri & The Scarecrow has released an official debut 7 track project titled "Messenger is Sender The EP" (2015/Produced & written by Dimitri D. Kwenda), Crass Roots Rap (2020/Produced & written by Dimitri D. Kwenda), Saving The World (2021 Single, produced & written Dimitri D. Kwenda with Benjamin Wana) and Posers (2021/ Produced by DJ Vadim, written by Dimitri D. Kwenda). It is important to not that consistently, all of these projects have been nominated for awards at the Zim Hip-Hop Awards. In 2023/24 Dimitri is finally launching into a massive body of work which includes, 3 EPs and full length album.
