Fede?
Bio
Fede? is an innovative musical collective formed in 2022 under the guidance of Mushroom Hour Half Hour, a distinctive independent record label based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Mushroom Hour Half Hour is known for championing non-mainstream artists and avant-garde sounds, collaborating with musicians who bring unique perspectives to the jazz, Afro-funk, and experimental electro scenes. As part of their SPAZA project, a rotating ensemble that features improvised and workshopped performances, Mushroom Hour assembled the group of musicians that eventually became Fede?.
Initially performing under the SPAZA name, the collective worked on an ambitious project centered around the life and legacy of Makhanda ka Nxele, a historic Xhosa prophet and leader. Their work evolved into a powerful musical narrative that explored and responded to Makhanda's story, leading them to tour Europe in 2022, performing at prestigious venues and festivals such as Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen, AB Club in Brussels, and Banlieues Bleues in Paris.
Upon returning to South Africa, the group rebranded to Fede?—a colloquial South African term meaning “do you understand?” or “you get it?” This name captures the group’s mission of interrogation and response, embodying their process of questioning and exploring topics through music. Fede? is known for its spontaneous, dialogue-driven approach to creating music, often building sonic responses to themes rooted in social, cultural, and historical contexts.
The members of Fede? are dynamic and active musicians who bring a wealth of experience and passion to the collective. The lineup includes Nosisi Ngakane, Malcolm Jiyane, Gontse Makhene, Lungile Kunene, Linda Tshabalala, Nkosinathi Mathunjwa, and Ayanda Zalekile. Together, they continue to push the boundaries of music-making, cultivating a sound that is both innovative and deeply rooted in South African heritage.
