MOTRAMUSIC

MOTRAMUSIC is an all-female percussion project based in Nairobi Kenya. “MOTRA” stands for “MOdern and TRAditional” rhythms. As the name suggests, MOTRAMUSIC aims at bringing together modern and traditional styles of drumming into a delicate mix that’s relatable to audiences of all ages.

Founded in 2016, MOTRAMUSIC is the first of its kind in Nairobi, and possibly in the country. It aims at teaching young women and girls the fundamentals of percussion and drumming and encouraging them to diversify their positions in music.

Overtime, MOTRAMUSIC is not only a place where the girls meet for drumming lessons and mentorship but has grown into a sisterhood where they have formed long lasting friendships and bonds. The girls have developed incredible support systems for each other, and this dynamic can be heavily seen in their performances.

MOTRAMUSIC hopes to build a “girls drum tribe” and works hard to equalize the drumming space in Kenya. “It is not easy, but we focus on one girl, one beat at a time”, Kasiva says.
