Bio
Salma Mshamu Munde is a multitalented singer-songwriter and poet from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Her music is a celebration of modern African alternative music, fusing different genres like R&B, Soul and Hip Hop with Swahili inspired stylings. Salma’s unique bilingual compositions play Kiswahili and English with a poetic ease, birthing futuristic symphonies with subtle Pwani elements.
Salma has been participating in talent shows and leading choirs from a very young age, but it was not until when she was in college that she became truly inspired to become a musician. Reuniting with producers and artists during that time inspired a life changing career change from environmental science to performing arts.
Salma’s first appearance in the Live music scene was in 2017 where their lyricism and powerful vocals were introduced to the local Open Mics and Pop Up events scenes like The Lounge in mikocheni and Crazy Mondays of Zanzibar. Sharing a stage with Mwasiti’s THT artists as an opening act for an event hosted by Tanzanian Rapper Fid Q’s as well as performing on Hip Hop Cyphers by the notable Tanzanian producer Duke Tachez of Tamaduni Music.
Her music ability to create alternative Swahili music has been making an impression in tbe East African art community. Like her debute single Breath Easy’ (Produced by KIKO) that was released in 2017. That same year she also released a poetry video in collaboration with Poetry Shule and her second single ‘How You Feel’ (produced by Domibeats) featuring a Tanzanian Rapper and poet called Mukimala.
Since then they have continued to give us outstanding performances all over East Africa.
And has released numerous female lead projects like a music Video for her most popular song “Utamu” which was shot and directed by a power team of women. As well as an alien inspired single called ‘Planet June’ produced by a talented female producer from Tanzania called Agnes Malinzi.
Her recent performance at Alliance Francaise Dar and anticipated EP titled “ Miss Bongo” show the exciting direction that Salma is taking her music, creating well thought out and conceptual songs in collaboration with fellow African women and artists.
Salma is currently based in Dar es Salaam,Tanzania where they continues to serenade us with their electric presence and masterful composition.
