AfriMusic Song Contest winner to make Eurostream 2020 appearance
The winner of this year's AfriMusic Song Contest, Dhortune ThatOndoBo, will be a guest performer at the Eurostream 2020 grand finale on 9 May at 9pm CAT.
Eurostream 2020 is the online extension of the Eurovision Song Contest, which was scheduled to take place in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from 12 to 16 May, but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eurostream began on 5 May and fans around the world can watch the virtual event here. The second semi-final takes place on 7 May.
AfriMusic partnered with Eurovision in 2018 to take each winner to perform at the Eurovillage in front of thousands of fans and spectators across the globe. This year's winner from Nigeria, Dhortune ThatOndoBo, was to receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Rotterdam, before international travel and public gatherings were restricted by the pandemic.
“We are very excited that we are able to offer our winner an opportunity to perform at the grand finale of Eurostream 2020,” the AfriMusic Song Contest organisers said. “During these trying times, we are uncertain when social gatherings will resume, therefore it is important to keep music alive and securing global opportunities for our artists to showcase their talents digitally.”
Dhortune ThatOndoBoy won the 2020 AfriMusic Song Contest with 6.5 points and 315 314 votes. Following in second is fellow Nigerian Zinny with 6.5 points and 22 243 votes, while Ghana’s EpiqMenz took third with 5.5 points and 255 317 votes.
In addition to Dhortune ThatOndoBoy's participation at Eurostream 2020, South African singer and instrumentalist Kenton Lee's song ‘Undefeated’ will be featured during the semi-finals on 7 May at 9pm. Lee is among the artists who competed at this year’s AfriMusic Song Contest with his song ‘Echo’. When the outbreak hit South Africa, Lee wrote ‘Undefeated’, which carries a global message of hope from children around the world.
“’Undefeated’ is so beautifully written and produced that AfriMusic wanted to share Kenton’s original song with the world, in order to bring people and communities together, with a universal message. ‘Undefeated’ is so relevant to the struggles the world is currently facing, and to have Eurostream 2020 as the very first international platform to showcase this song of hope from Africa to the world is a huge honour,” AfriMusic said.
