Billy Ocean, Salif Keita heading to Botswana
Trinidad-born English R&B singer Billy Ocean and Malian superstar Salif Keita have been confirmed as the headliners of Hamptons Jazz Festival in Gaborone, Botswana, on 28 April.
The two veteran musicians will be joined by South African artists Amanda Black, Zahara, Nathi and Amanda Mankayi as well as Lesotho's Bhudaza Mapefane. Added to the line-up are local artists Socca Moruakgomo, Nnunu Ramogotsi, Thabang Gaorogwe, Shanti Lo, ATI, Thato Jessica, Ndingo Johwa, DJs Jazzy Pete and Bush.
“AmaZulu, the heavens will open. I can’t wait to see you, this is my first time performing in Botswana,” Amanda Black said. “I can’t believe it’s happening, this is big for me, as I've been wanting to cross the border and share my music.”
Festival founder Debbie Smith said drawing artists from different musical backgrounds for the event was intended to create unbeatable entertainment value.
“We have brought the best in jazz and have fused it with the cream of the crop in Botswana jazz artists," she said. "It will be a lovely fusion. Hamptons Jazz Festival will reflect on the current music and gleefully point forward in new directions.”
Smith said the festival would improve local artists. “It helps in bringing international artists to perform with locals so that they get exposed to international standards and may lead to collaborations. We hope our arts get exposed to the global podium. That will get us more recognition as Botswana and promote our country and tourism.”
She said the festival was established because the organisers had seen a niche market that had not been explored to its full potential in the past.
“Hamptons Jazz Festival only specialises in live events, aiming to captivate the mature, savvy jazz audience who appreciate an open-air jazz atmosphere. This annual gathering has become more of a reunion, a movement and a celebration of friends, family, culture and music,” Smith said, adding that the festival acts as a positive brand ambassador for Botswana.
