Black Coffee, Sampa the Great to play Coachella
African musicians including Black Coffee (South Africa), Sampa the Great (Zambia/Australia), AMÉMÉ (Benin/US) and Dave (UK/Ghana) have been confirmed to perform at Coachella this year following the festival’s two-year hiatus.
After a number of COVID-related delays and cancellations, the AEG-owned event announced the full line-up on Wednesday. The festival will be held on two weekends: 15 to 17 and 22 to 24 in April. It will be livestreamed on Coachella’s YouTube channel.
The African stars will be joined by big names such as Kanye West (YE), Billie Eilish, Harry Styles and Swedish House Mafia, who will headline the festival at Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. The line-up also includes global stars Megan Thee Stallion, Ari Lennox, Big Sean, Lil Baby, 21 Savage, Doja Cat, Run the Jewels, Danny Elfman, Vince Staples, Baby Keem, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, Arooj Aftab, Orville Peck, Fatboy Slim and Duck Sause, among many others [full line-up below].
The headliners for Coachella 2020 included Frank Ocean, Rage Against the Machine and Travis Scott. Ocean will now headline Coachella 2023, while Scott’s status as a headliner is being questioned following the Astroworld tragedy, which led to the death of 10 festivalgoers at his concert last year.
Coachella was last held in 2019 and featured headliners Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino and Tame Impala. Its 2020 edition was initially postponed from March to October, but was eventually cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, marking the first time the event had been cancelled in 20 years. The event was then rescheduled for April 2021 before it was cancelled again in January that year.
AEG had previously issued a nationwide vaccine mandate for its events. However, in October, Coachella backtracked on the policy and said it would no longer require full vaccination for attendees at the 2022 festival.
“After seeing first-hand the low transmission data and successful implementation of safety protocols at our other festivals this past month, we feel confident that we can update our health policy to allow for: Negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the event or proof of full vaccination,” the organisers wrote on social media.
