Black Sherif reaches 100 million streams on Boomplay
Africa-facing streaming service Boomplay on Friday announced that hip hop act Black Sherif had reached 100 million streams on the platform, making him the first Ghanaian artist to achieve the milestone.
This arrives a few months after his ‘First Sermon’ and ‘Second Sermon’ were adjudged the two fastest-rising songs to reach 1 million streams on Boomplay last year.
It also ushers Black Sherif into Boomplay’s Golden Club, whose other members include Nigeria’s Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Fireboy DML, Joeboy and Omah Lay, as well as Tanzania’s Diamond Platinumz and Rayvanny.
“Reaching 100 million streams on Boomplay in such a short time and being the first Ghanaian artist to achieve this feat is a big deal to me,” the artist said. “As a young kid from Konongo, who only had a dream and a voice, this brings me to the realisation that I can achieve anything so long as I believe and dare myself to take action. Big love to the Boomplay team for putting me on from day one till now,” Black Sherif said.
Born Mohammed Ismail Shariff and signed to American distribution company and record label EMPIRE, the 20 year old is also behind ‘Kwaku the Traveller’, a diaristic and galvanising record that boasts more than 40 million streams on Boomplay alone.
In April, the song also helped Black Sherif to become the first Ghanaian artist to reach No 1 on Apple Music Nigeria’s Top 100 chart and enter the streaming platform’s top 10 in South Africa.
The artist bagged awards at both the 2022 3Music Awards and the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards held earlier this year.
In a recent interview with Music In Africa, Black Sherif said: “I am super elated about how people share in music and my journey as a whole. I want to inspire kids to be free and create art without any limitations.”
