Call for applications: Artistic journalism fellowship in Canada

The year-long fellowship will be awarded to individuals whose work exhibits a commitment to integrating creative practice with rigorous journalistic research, writing and multimedia production.

Launched in 2007, ArtsEverywhere is an online platform for artistic experimentation and exploration of the fault lines of modern society.

“We do that by placing artistic thinking and inquiry in relation to everyday life and the urgencies and struggles of our societies and communities,” Musagetes says. "Our research and artistic projects over the past few years given us greater clarity on the role of art in social evolution; the processes by which the arts evolve meaning for individuals and communities. Musagetes believes that the arts are transformative in their cumulative impact on our social and political institutions.”

ArtsEverywhere is committed to two core principles:

• That arts must be a central component of individual and collective experiences of the world.
• The arts must be a vital part of all social and political processes (governance, justice, activism, economies, education, etc.)

Selected candidates will receive support from professional artists, journalists and producers, including the ArtsEverywhere editorial staff, contributors and commissioned mentors.

The most impressive projects will be presented at the 2021 ArtsEverywhere Festival.

The application deadline is 1 November and only shortlisted candidates will be notified.

Who can apply?

The ArtsEverywhere Fellowship for Artistic Journalism is open to musicians, journalists, writers, producers, visual artists and collectives.

Project eligibility

The proposed project should:

• Be written in English
• Exhibit a commitment to integrating creative practice with rigorous journalistic research, writing and multimedia production.
• Conform to the approaches of reportage and long-form narrative storytelling.
• Have been developed in collaboration with independent artists, journalists and producers as well as cultural and academic institutions, media outlets, and international NGOs.
• Be focused on locations in Africa, Asia, Australia, the South Pacific, South America and the Caribbean, or in under-reported parts of North America and Europe.

Requirements

• Cover letter.
• CV/ short bio.
• Story pitch (max 500 words, can be accompanied by appendixes that clarify the concept).
• A drawing/sketch/visual treatment of your story idea that illustrates the narrative structure, arc and connectivity with sources and potential partner outlets.
• Two work samples that can be evaluated within the parameters of the fellowship objectives and requirements.
• A letter of reference (additional letters will be accepted but are not required).
• Website, digital portfolio or any links to previous or related work.

Selection process

The fellowship will be awarded based on:

• Quality background research and proof of concept.
• Feasibility of timeline and final project.
• Demonstrated experience in creating compelling non-fiction narrative, in tandem or through quality artistic production.
• Measured usability of the final product to lend towards positive social change in relation to sources and focus communities.

Remuneration

The successful candidate will receive Can$15 000 ($11 300) as a fee and Can$5 000 for travel, equipment and other project costs.
