Call for applications: Artists in Residency 2019
The Africa Centre is now accepting applications for its 2019 Artists in Residency (AIR) programme.
AIR was started in 2011 as an initiative to provide African artists with opportunities. It has partnered with various international organisations to offer residencies for artists on the continent. AIR partners include the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Centre Residency Programme (Italy), the Bundanon Trust (Australia), Instituto Sacatar (Brazil), the Fountainhead Residency (US) and the International Studio and Curatorial Programme (US)
The deadline for applications is 15 October 2018 (23.59pm GMT+2:00).
Who can apply?
This opportunity is open to emerging, mid-career and senior-level individuals involved in the following artistic disciplines:
- Music
- Visual arts
- Performing arts
- Curatorial practice
- Creative writing and literature
Eligibility
Following this call, applicants should:
- Be over 21 years of age.
- Have a valid passport.
- Be from the African continent and must minimally reside in Africa for six months of the year.
- Display a high proficiency in English.

- Email application: To apply, download the application form here and send directly to airsubmissions@africacentre.net. Attachments should be less than 5MB. If your attachments are larger than 5MB, you can upload them using Google Drive and send the link to the email provided above.
Note: Be sure to add the artistic discipline you are applying under i.e. visual arts, performing arts, music, etc. followed by a dash and your full name in the email subject field.
Selection process
Applicants will be shortlisted by a panel of AIR staff, strategic partners and seasoned art practitioners based on:
- The quality of work or portfolio.
- Written narrative (i.e. the ability to adequately process and respond to the application questions).
- Previous experience and history of developing artistic work that advances social change and transformation in communities.
