Call for applications: Film Empowerment Programme in Kenya
The Kenya Film Commission (KFC) is calling on its members to apply for the Film Empowerment Programme.
The programme promotes and develops local content through the provision of film and video-related funding. The fund may take the form of a grant, investment or loan.
In addition to the financial assistance, support mechanisms will be made available upon approval of funding. The financial support provided to selected projects will vary according to the specific cash flow needs of the applicants.
Eligible KFC members include freelancers, companies and associations working in the following fields:
- Music.
- New media.
- Cinematography.
- Directing.
- Writing.
- Production.
- Associations and guilds.
- Gaming design/production.
- TV and film distribution.
Funding for the Film Empowerment Programme will be available in the following categories:
Development funding
The eligible projects in this category include:
- Documentaries.
- Short or feature films (fiction or non-fiction).
- Television concepts that can be formatted, sold globally and licensed for remake rights or for syndication.
Production funding
Eligible candidates include:
- Kenyan production companies with relevant experience and a credible track record in producing content of broadcast quality.
- Filmmakers or writers who have a production company attached to the project.
Film festivals and markets funding
The eligible applicants include:
- Filmmakers and distributors. The objective of the grant is to provide financial support to promote the content at film markets and festivals effectively.
Selection criteria
- Each category of funding will have its specific criteria. The ultimate goal will be to ensure that filmmakers ranging from emerging to experienced benefit equitably from the funds.
- The selection committee should comprise of KFC board reps, KFC select officials and experienced industry stakeholders.
- All applicants shall be notified in writing of the outcome of their application, and the complete list of approvals will be published.

The KFC will approve funding throughout the financial year from 1 July to June 30.
The application deadline is 18 December.
