Call for applications: Gospel singing competition, winner to perform in the US
South African internet radio station Mzansi Urban Radio and Africa-USA Unity Events are calling on local gospel singers to submit applications to compete in a singing competition. The winner will tour the US from 15 to 26 August.
Interested gospel artists should enter the competition by sending an email to enter@mzansiurban.co.za. The submission deadline is 16 June. Should the winner be unable to attend, the prize will be passed onto the first runner-up and should the first runner-up also fail to attend, the prize will be passed onto the second runner-up, until there is a finalist that is able to attend.
Requirements
- Short motivation letter citing why you think you deserve to win the prize
- You also need to include your personal details, including: full name, age, gender, cell number, email address and name of most recent release
- The winner should be in the possession of a US visa or should be in a position to qualify for one
- The visa fee of $160 will paid by the winning artist
- You must be a resident of South Africa, in possession of a South African ID and passport. The passport shouldn’t be expiring within the next nine months
- You must be at least 21 years of age by 31 July 2019
- You must have recorded and released at least one gospel album in the last five years or a single in the last year
- You should be an actively practicing (full-time or part-time) as a musician in any capacity
- You must be able to sing vernacular gospel songs
- You must be active on social media with at least 1000 followers on Facebook or/and Instagram
- You should be able to travel (at own expense) within Gauteng province for competition publicity programs and training
What does the winner get?
- The selected winner will then be offered a trip to perform in the US as a prize
- The organisers will pay for the winner’s flight tickets, accommodation in the US, food and all road travel while in the US
- Consolation prizes might also be made available at the discretion of the organisers and will be communicated timeously via acceptable channels to the artists
- The winner’s itinerary in the US will be finalised at a later stage; however, the organisers undertake to feature the artists in the Atlanta, Georgia tour programme happening in the month of August 2019
Following the submissions, the competition committee will shortlist a Top 20 from the entries who will go into a public voting phase to determine the final winner.
Top 20 finalists
Once all initial entries have been received, Top 20 contestants will be chosen by the organisers based on:
- Criteria set out in number of this document
- Uniqueness of sound
- Other factors like gender and geographical representation
Top 20 finalists’ responsibilities and entitlements:
- A free photoshoot (studio). You can keep pictures after the competition (maximum 5 pics) on 15 June
- A free artist branding workshop at a venue within Gauteng (transport not provided) on 15 June
- Chance to attend the launch event on 15 June
- A professional interview (which will be archived for personal use) with Mzansi Urban Radio and substantial amount of airplay during competition period between 12 June 2019 and 23 June 2019
- Attend the announcement grand finale show in Pretoria, where you might be expected to perform between one and two songs as part the Top 20 finalist responsibilities – 6 or 7 July 2019
- Rally supporters to vote for you on the Mzansi Urban Radio app (support material will be provided). The winner is expected to accumulate at least 1000 votes to qualify for the prize.
