Call for applications: Residency for displaced artists

AiE is primarily intended for displaced cultural producers, and preference will be given to those with an at-risk status. The programme will offer three-month fellowships to a filmmaker, videographer, sound artist and visual artist to work on the theme, Fixing What’s Broken.

Applicants should be cultural producers who advocate on behalf of human rights, democracy and the pursuit of free expression and/or who have been displaced because of their professional work.

The monthly stipend amounts to €2 500 (about $2 850). AiE is unable to provide studio space or supplemental funding for materials. Artists in residence will, however, have access to shared offices at FU Berlin, Campus Lankwitz.

Artists in residence are requested to make available work produced as a result of the fellowship for exhibition and/or publication in print, online and on the AiE website.

Requirements

• A completed applicant information form, which is available for download here.
• A letter that explains the applicant’s motivation for applying to AiE, including the current circumstances of their risk and/or exile status.
• A two-page proposal for work to be undertaken during the fellowship that explains how the work relates to the theme, Fixing What’s Broken and the broad mission of AiE .
• A CV.
• A work sample or example from a portfolio.

Applicants can submit their application to aie.artists@uni-due.de as one PDF and name the file as follows: surname_first name.

Note:

• All applications will be dealt with in strict confidentiality. Submitted online applications are processed and stored electronically.
• AiE provides secured emails with S/MIME. If an applicant chooses to submit without additional protection, AiE cannot guarantee the security of transmitted personal data. 

The application deadline is 21 November.

Selection process

Applications will be assessed by members of the AiE team and an international jury and evaluated according to artistic merit, risk assessment, civil society advocacy and willingness to engage with the fellows and program offerings of AiE.
