Call for applications: Sound design mentorship programme in SA
William Kentridge's Centre for the Less Good Idea is calling on artists to apply for its sound composition and design mentorship programme in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 2 to 22 November.
Only three artists will be accommodated and will be mentored by South African composer and bassist Shane Cooper. The renowned musician will undertake collaborative, episodic and sonic compositions and design to construct three-dimensional podcasts as a living work of art.
How to apply
Interested artists should submit an expression of interest. The expression should come in the form of a short text and example of work that describes the applicant’s practice and motivation for why he/she would like to participate.
The expression of interest should be emailed to lessgoodidea@gmail.com. The submission deadline 23 October. Those selected will receive a basic honorarium.
The mentorship will be held in November and the compulsory dates are:
- Recording at centre spaces – 2 to 6 November.
- Sculpting and post-production – 9 to 22 November.
Cooper’s work can be found in the spaces of jazz, improvised and electronic music, and scoring for film and theatre. He is known for his interest in blurring the lines of genre, and finding the magic and depth where different sonic universes can meet.
In 2013, he was selected as the Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz. In 2014 his quintet record Oscillations won a South African Music Award for Best Jazz Album. The projects he is currently involved in include Mabuta, the Kyle Shepherd Trio, Thandi Ntuli’s live band, as well as his electronic music alias Card on Spokes. In the past, he has performed and recorded with artists like Zim Ngqawana, Lionel Loueke, Shabaka Hutchings, Talvin Singh, Louis Moholo, Soweto Kinch, Spoek Mathambo and Young Father.
