Call for applications: Sound engineering workshop for women in Nairobi
Goethe-Institut is inviting women and non-binary people to apply to participate in a sound engineering training workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, from 15 March to 7 April.
- The application deadline is 5 March 2023.
As part of its Jenga CCI programme, Goethe-Institut Nairobi is implementing the workshop, titled Holla Systers – Sound Engineering for Women, in partnership with the Sound Systers Collective.
The vision of the programme is to transform the live music scene by bringing more women and non-male persons into the sound field and on stage, and to make room for more gender diversity.
The workshop will focus on sound engineering, production and empowerment tools and skills. The training will focus on understanding signal flow, how to set up and use different sound equipment (speakers, monitors, mixers, microphones, EQ and more) and how to create a basic mix for live shows.
The aim is to encourage non-male participants through skill sharing and exchange, to take the steps needed into the technical, musical and production areas in the live music, cultural or political industry. This includes knowledge exchange in curated workshops as well as planning and running your own music and events with an inclusive character.
The sessions comprise of a minimum of 40 hours of theory and practice of live sound engineering, and will include at least three physical sessions per week, with participants training hands-on during two live events on 31 March and 7 April.
The workshop is broken into two levels and each level will culminate in an event produced together with the participants:
- Level 1 will be concluded with a DJ showcase where the group will actively participate in production and sound work.
- Level 2 will be concluded with a more experienced show of live bands in which the group will, again, be involved in production and sound work.
The application deadline is 5 March 2023. Those interested in participating can apply here.
