Call for applications: Training workshop in Namibia
The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) and Goethe-Institut Namibia are calling on music professionals to apply for a training workshop scheduled to take place at the Goethe-Institut in Windhoek, Namibia, on 6 and 7 December 2017.
The workshop, titled Steps to a Professional Music Career, is designed for musicians, producers, artist managers, artist booking agents, music educators and arts journalists.
Part of the MIAF’s global continental training programme that has been to Senegal, South Africa, the DRC and Burkina Faso, the workshop will be facilitated by prolific South African musician, producer and music educator Concord Nkabinde. The workshop will run from 5.30pm to 9pm on both days.
It will feature a combination of theory and practical exercises covering topics such as:
- What does it mean to be a musician?
- Starting a music project.
- Marketing/publicity for music products.
- Intellectual property and copyrights.
- Tools for musicians.
Participants will also get a chance to learn more about the Music In Africa portal and how to use it to navigate the industry. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will receive a certificate.
Concord Nkabinde is a musician, composer, producer and music educator. He completed a bachelor of music degree in jazz studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and has taught at the Federated Union of Black Arts (FUBA) and the Funda Art Centre.
In 2002, Nkabinde set up the Drocnoc Music record label and went on to release two self-produced CDs, 'The Time, The Season' and 'This Is My World'.
He is a highly sought-after bass guitarist working with the likes of Abdullah Ibrahim, Joyous Celebration, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Arno Carstens, Roy Ayers, Vusi Mahlasela, Theuns Jordaan, McCoy Mrubata, Ernie Smith and many others. He has also worked with the late Miriam Makeba, Ray Phiri and Zim Ngqawana.
How to apply
To participate in the workshop you have to:
- Be pursuing a career in the music industry in Namibia (musicians, producers, artist managers, artist booking agents, music educators and arts journalists are welcome).
- Have at least 2 years’ experience in the industry.
Up to 15 candidates can participate in the workshop and the deadline for applications is 3 December. Application forms can be completed online here. Selected participants will be notified via email.
The workshop is in line with MIAF’s vision to support the African music sector through information and skills exchange. The MIAF is a pan-African initiative supported by the Goethe-Institut and Siemens Stiftung.
