About Jamhuri Day
Jamhuri is Swahili for ‘republic’. Kenya gained its independence on 12 December 1963, and became a republic a year later, with the late Jomo Kenyatta elected as the country’s first president. Celebrations include feasts, political speeches, parades and music performances.
