The contest honours the Roman emperor Constantine the Great who is credited for having issued the Edict of Milan, a document that permanently established the religious toleration for Christianity within the Roman Empire.
The competition was launched in 2019 to develop and affirm young artists and strengthen international cultural relations. It also seeks to connect people, remove geographical barriers, and create the possibility of pupils, students and artists from all over the world to participate.
"The Faculty of Arts of the University of Niš, aside from its educational activity, also has its significant artistic activity in the fields of music, visual arts and applied arts," the institute said.
"The Faculty was granted the highest city award as a sign of recognition of its mission of spreading and affirming high artistic values. The Faculty policy to engage eminent world-class artists as guest professors and permanent hosting of master courses and workshops, contributes to the growing reputation of the Faculty, the University and the City of Niš in the wider academic and social community."
The first competition saw entries from Russia, Italy, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Greece, Sweden, Slovenia, Northern Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, Latvia, Albania, Ukraine and Bulgaria, among others. The winner was pianist Nikola Varžić from Slovenia.
