Call for funding: Dhow Countries Music Academy in Zanzibar
The Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA) in Zanzibar, Tanzania, is seeking funding opportunities from well-wishers to keep the institution running.
The DCMA wants to raise $70 000 by the end of the year to sustain its award-winning concerts, music programmes and classes.
“The DCMA is a non-governmental organisation primarily supported by private donors and foundations,” it said. “Yet, 70% of our students cannot afford basic tuition. We currently do not have enough funds to cover the many costs needed to run the academy.
“We anticipate a multi-year collaboration soon, but currently face a gap in funds through December and this is why your support at this moment is critical, to save the future of Zanzibari culture and heritage through music.”
The DCMA has more than 80 students and a community of young musicians who seek alternatives to earn a living as creatives through the institution’s live concerts series.
“Promoting Zanzibari culture and heritage through music is at the heart of what we do, with over 120 live performances each year. Music empowers and it also employs. We teach in remote villages and work with students with disabilities.”
The DCMA first opened its doors in 2001 and has since contributed to the promotion and preservation of Zanzibar's unique mix of Arab, Indian and African cultures through music.
The institution has successfully trained 1 800 students in certificate and diploma courses, most notably Siti and the Band founder Siti Amina, who is a teacher at the DCMA.
