Call for submissions: Band or Bust competition in South Africa
South African music publication Texx and the City (TATC) is calling on all unsigned musicians to enter its Band or Bust competition at Stellenbosch University in South Africa from 7 March.
The first edition of the competition, which is organised in partnership with Toyota US Woordfees, seeks to showcase underground and independent talent.
The winning act will walk away with a R10 000 ($690) cash prize, the recording of a single produced by Theo Crous and Karen Zoid, as well as an electronic press kit and a professional photo shoot.
The submissions will be judged by Theo Crous (musician and producer), Wynand Myburgh (musician and band manager), Misha Loots (BNAS co-founder and music festival producer) and TATC’s editor and founder Tecla Ciolfi. The four judges will pick five finalists who will perform at the event.
The submission deadline is 31 January (10am) and the finalists will be announced on TATC on 7 February.
How to enter
- Email your submission to contact@texxandthecity.com.
- Make sure to include 'BAND OR BUST SUBMISSION' and the name of your act in the subject line
- Your submission must include: a biography, a high-res photo, social media handles and a link to your music.
- The music you submit can be an album, EP or an individual track.
- You can submit links to your music on streaming services.
- You can submit unreleased tracks as attachments in your submission.
Terms and conditions
- You cannot enter if you work for or are affiliated with Woordfees or TATC.
- You must be an independent musician.
- You must not have an existing deal with any record label.
- The winning act will receive the R10 000 no later than 30 days after the competition.
- The winning act will receive their photo shoot no later than 30 days after the competition.
- TATC will assist the winning act in liaising with the studio as to when the recording will take place.
- If selected to participate in the final, musicians are responsible for their own travel and accommodation.
