Coalesce launches royalty calculator
US digital agency Coalesce, in collaboration with music manager Jordan Mattison, has launched a new online streaming royalty calculator for musicians called Good Splits.
The free-to-use tool allows musicians to "quickly and easily" calculate royalties from aggregator services. Artists can also split the revenues between collaborators with minimal data or spreadsheet wrangling, among other features.
Good Splits supports aggregators such as TuneCore, AWAL, CD Baby, DistrokKid, Symphonic and oneRPM. Users just need a sales report, in .csv format, from the service they use to get started.
“This app hides complicated accounting math inside a simple UI [user interface] that lets you scan for the most important info and won’t overwhelm you with extra data," Coalesce said. “It’s not a payment tool but it does help speed up the process.”
Good Splits was created in 2019 and aims to make the music industry fairer. “Good Splits beta was launched to a select few early adopters and it had a bigger impact that we ever could have imagined,” Mattison said.
"We took real user feedback into account and continue to evolve the product as new needs arise, but the primary mission remains: we engineered it for musicians, not accountants. It’s the easiest, most lightweight tool of its kind, and we aim to keep it that way.
"We’re passionate about transparency in the music business because it has a terrible history of serving the artist last. We want to empower musicians to take back control of their careers and see more revenue from their songs. This is one step towards a more equitable music business.”
Good Splits is currently accepting users on a rolling basis. Interested artists should enter their details here to get access to the service.
Meanwhile, AWAL last week said hundreds of its independent artists made more than $100 000 from music streams in the past year. The figure was up 40% year-on-year.
