Cobhams Asuquo charts top 12 Nigerian songs
Perhaps as response to the abundance of chart shows on Nigerian radio, acclaimed producer Cobhams Asuquo has taken his own show to the internet. Named ‘The Top 12 CountDown with Cobhams Asuquo,’ the quasi-weekly podcast brings a dozen songs to the attention of the audience.
Asuquo, whose productions are notable for a local spin on western rhythms, has been working on the sophomore releases of singers Bez and Timi Dakolo. Both albums are yet to be released and anticipated. Previous collaboration with Dakolo led to the singer’s dominance at the last Headies award ceremony, where the Asuquo produced song ‘Wish Me Well’ won three awards including the prestigious ‘Song of the Year’ award. The highly acclaimed song was a successful sequel to the work both did on Dakolo’s 2011 debut Beautiful Noise.
In the same year, singer Bez released Super Sun. The album spawned the single ‘That Stupid Song’ featuring Praiz, and came in at third place on the 2011 Boston Globe list of world music albums. Again, Cobhams received production credit—as he did for the self-titled debut by Nigerian singer Asa, who, now based in France, performed at a recent Lagos function.
The producer will be taking his ear for music into the chart show, which has seen three episodes released so far. “The top 10 countdown is where I, Cobhams Asuquo, get to countdown the most awesome Nigerian songs,” Asuquo said by way of introducing his chart show. “This list is made up of exclusively good music and by good music i don’t necessarily mean music that just sounds great. I mean music that’s got soul, music that moves you.”
Alongside providing listeners with a set of songs, the show features humour, quizzes and attendant prizes. A 48-inch flat screen television has been won from the show’s first episode.
