Timi Dakolo is king of 2015 Headies
Due to a late rescheduling, the 2015 edition of the Headies, Nigeria’s premier music award ceremony, took place on Friday 1 January 2016. As it had in the previous edition, the event, which held at the Landmark Event Centre in Ikeja, Lagos, kicked off much later than announced.
Rapper Olamide came in with the most nominations. His tally of eight was followed closely by Wizkid’s seven. The latter, however, was absent at the ceremony. At the end of the event several hours later, Timi Dakolo had emerged big winner on the night with three awards. His song ‘Wish Me Well’ won the award for Best Vocal Performance (Male), Best R&B Song and Best Recording.
“Thank you Lord for the gift of music,” Dakolo posted on Instagram accompanied by a photo of himself holding two trophies. “...for the ideas you let come my way. To my family and yard people for understanding when I say, ‘keep quiet, daddy is doing his homework’. My wife, women don't come better than you. Let's ask God for another forever. I honestly think this one is too short.”
He also thanked his producer Cobhams Asuquo: “I know I would have given up a long time. You always say the right things. For always expanding the tiny ideas I come up with. You are the melody king, the producer.”
Meanwhile, the award for Best Rap Album was won by MI’s The Chairman album and the coveted Lyricist on the Roll was awarded to Vector for ‘King Kong’. The keenly contested Next Rated award was won by Reekado Banks, sparking a controversy that continued till after the event. The issue led to a heated debate about who should have received the only award that comes with a car gift. Lil Kesh and Kiss Daniel were considered in some quarters as more worthy.
The female winners were Yemi Alade and Cynthia Morgan. Ms Alade was the Revelation of the Year and Morgan won the Dancehall award over Timaya, Burna Boy and Patoranking among others.
