Moonchild is currently in the United Kingdom as part of her tour, where she has been met with an overwhelmingly positive reception.
Speaking on Elton John’s Rocket Hour radio show, the British icon expressed his admiration for Moonchild, calling her “amazing” and highlighting her fearless artistry. He particularly praised the music video for her song ‘Falling’, which he described as one of his favourites.
“Your whole album is just wonderful, I just play it constantly,” Elton John said. “And your video for ‘Falling’ is one of my favourite videos of all time, and it's just I fell in love with you visually and I fell in love with you orally.”
During the interview, Moonchild Sanelly reflected on her early musical influences, revealing that she first experimented with songwriting by creating her own melodies to Spice Girls lyrics.
“Because I didn't necessarily have all the albums, I had all the popular songs, and my friends had no access at all,” Moonchild said. “So I take those lyrics, put my own melodies, and we called ourselves Baps Girls. And so I’d either be Baby Spice or Scary Spice because I ran the thing. So that was my first real memory, it was flipping Spice Girls songs to make them my own songs.”
The conversation also touched on her collaboration with British rapper Little Simz. “I’m a Little Simz fan. I was honoured. I literally was walking downstairs, she WhatsApped me to say, ‘There's a song I'd like you to be a part of.’ I said, ‘I'm leaving tomorrow. I am here today. Organise a studio, I’m there like a bear’. And I went on the same day because I’m such a fan.”
Discussing her tour, Moonchild shared her excitement over the enthusiastic reception she has received in Britain. She also reflected on the deep connection she feels to British pop music, which shaped much of her upbringing.
Elton John praised Moonchild Sanelly’s stage presence, and said he was eager to see her perform “live, because you are such a personality. You are just full of life and full of joy, and I'm sure when you're on stage that comes across 100 times more than when I'm talking to you now, and I'm sure your electric live.”
The interview concluded with Elton John playing ‘Scrambled Eggs’ from Full Moon and wishing her success on the rest of her tour.
