French Institute to launch new concert series in Burundi
A new concert series titled Rencontre Musicale (Music Meeting) will be launched at the French Institute in Bujumbura, Burundi, on 20 February.
The concert series are envisioned to promote collaborations between artists and are free to the public. Performances will be held monthly where musicians from different backgrounds will meet, share stories and compose music. Local musicians will also attend a short masterclass facilitated by a professional musician from abroad.
This first edition will feature French composer and flautist Olivier Riehl. Local artists set to collaborate are Yves Kami, Umudiho Groove, Amagaba Band, Lions Roar Band, and Afro Talent & Berenice the Bell.
Fusion musician Kami is organising the event in collaboration with the French Institute. He told Music In Africa that the idea to hold the concert series had come after he attended Ongala Music Festival in Tanzania last year.
“This bold and creative idea came to me after attending a workshop at the festival. So I decided to approach the French Institute for a partnership, and they loved the idea,” Kami said.
“Apart from guiding us, Riehl will also curate and collaborate with us on stage. The objective of the programme is to showcase the French Institute as a space for musical encounters where artists can freely meet and share experiences, and not just as an educational institution.”
Kami said the concerts would ensure a continuous connection between artists and educate the public about Burundi's music traditions. He is also confident that a collaborative environment will be advantageous to musicians in a country where performance opportunities are scarce.
“It is an excellent opportunity for the local musicians to meet and perform with professional musicians. I'm sure that we will see much creativity and many getting reignited to play live again. People will look forward to playing music when they otherwise have no chance,” Kami said.
