Ghana: Better Music Africa, La Palm Royal Beach Hotel enter partnership
Ghana's La Palm Royal Beach Hotel this week sealed a deal with Amsterdam-based music agency Better Music Africa (BMA) as part of efforts to rebrand, restructure and improve the musical experience at the Accra-based five-star hotel.
The news was confirmed to Music In Africa by BMA director Berima Amo, the Ghanaian composer and trumpet player who was named among the recipients of the 2021 Performing Arts Social Fund in the Netherlands.
This signing also coincides with the ‘Destination Ghana’ tourism initiative recently launched in the UK by the government of Ghana.
BMA currently has operations in six European cities and is looking to expand across West Africa. “Accra is fast becoming the premiere musical city of Africa, and BMA is here to expand the possibilities,” Amo said. "The next step is to create a space for creatives to express their art and I am glad to partner with La Palm Royal Beach Hotel to make this a reality."
Amo described the Ghanaian government’s latest campaign as wonderful, inviting Ghanaians living in the diaspora to come home and use their skills to better Ghana.
La Palm acting manager Kwesi Kwanim noted that the “cultural experience at La Palm is high on our agenda,” adding that he is looking forward to a rich experience for La Palm’s patrons. “As a leading five-star hotel in Ghana, we are excited about the future.”
BMA is behind a number of music initiatives including the Nkyimu Festival with the Dutch Embassy in Accra, which allowed emerging Ghanaian musicians from the diaspora to perform with local musicians.
BMA also periodically organises studio engineering masterclasses in Accra and started the Highlife Restoration agenda that seeks to create awareness for reviving Ghana’s authentic highlife music.
Amo, who secured an endorsement deal with Austrian trumpet maker Schagerl in 2020, recently announced new music with the Osaberima Big Band, the country’s first highlife big-band project in 30 years.
