Here are Africa’s 2024 BET Awards nominees
African musicians including Nigeria’s Burna Boy, Tems, Ayra Starr, Asake and Seyi Vibez as well as South Africa’s Tyla, Tyler ICU, Focalistic and Makhadzi have earned nominations ahead of this year’s BET Awards, which will air live on BET on 30 June.
Since 2001, the awards have recognised black entertainers in music, film, sport and philanthropy. This year’s nominees were selected by the BET Voting Academy, which includes entertainment influencers and professionals in music, media, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations and the creative arts.
Following her Grammy win in February, Tyla heads to the awards as Africa’s most nominated artist with four nods: Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, Viewer’s Choice Award and Best International Act.
In second, Ayra Starr is eyeing three awards in the Best New Artist, Best international Act and BET HER categories.
Burna Boy and Tems, both winners at the 2023 BET Awards, received two nominations each: Burna Boy in the Best Male Hip Hop and Best Male R&B/Pop Artist categories, and Tems in the Video Director of the Year and the Dr Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award categories.
Asake, Seyi Vibez, Tyler ICU, Makhadzi and Focalistic all secured one nomination each.
Meanwhile, Drake leads this year’s list of nominees with seven nods, including for Album of the Year. Nicki Minaj earned six nominations.
