Kenya: Matata’s Not Today featured on EA Sports FC 24 soundtrack
Norway-based Kenyan group Matata has announced that its track ‘Not Today’ has been featured on the official soundtrack of EA SPORTS FC 24 video game.
The game, formerly known as FIFA, is set to drop on 29 September 2023. Other African songs on the soundtrack are ‘Mamgobhozi’ by Major Lazer and Major League DJz ft. Brenda Fassie and ‘Osama’ by Zakes Bantwini, Kasango, Bruno Be and Ralk.
“Dreams do come true, and ours has become a reality. This achievement surpasses any plans we had for our music. We are still in disbelief!” the five-member band posted on social media on Wednesday.
‘Not Today’ is a reggae-dancehall tune off their debut album Super Morio. The song features Liam Bailey, a British reggae artist.
“‘Not Today’ encapsulates the essence of the group’s vibrant and unique musical style, making it a perfect fit for the high-energy atmosphere of the video game,” a statement from the band’s PR team reads. “This achievement is a testament to Matata’s dedication to creating music that transcends borders and resonates with audiences globally.
“The inclusion of the track as one of EA Sports FC 24 soundtrack playlist underscores the video game's commitment to showcasing diverse musical talents from around the world.”
The band was founded in 2016 by Kenyan dancers based in Oslo, Norway. The members, comprising Marcus Ojiambo, Ken Kimathi, Richie Mathu, Freddie Milanya and Festus Mwenda, were active participants in the Kenyan dance scene prior to moving to Norway.
At first they joined forces to form a dance outfit before slowly starting to incorporate music in their performances. But it was not until 2018 that the group started recording music.
The group’s first single ‘Denge’ was released in August 2019, while its debut album Super Morio came out in November 2022. The album features collaborations with Kenyan artists Sauti Sol, Okello Max, Wakadinali and Phy. Also included on the project are British reggae artist Liam Bailey and British-Ghanaian artist Akuvi.
