Kenya: Unganisha teases debut album with new single Ago
Kenyan-Norwegian music group Unganisha has released a new single titled ‘Ago’. The song, which is available for streaming and download on major digital platforms, is a lead-up to the group’s upcoming debut album set to drop on 3 November.
The duo, comprising Kenyan alternative musician Labdi Ommes and Norwegian experimental electro artist Bernt Isak Wærstad, is known for its eclectic fusion of musical elements.
‘Ago’, which follows the well-received 2022 EP Kucheza, bursts forth with a pulsating high-energy beat, seamlessly converging with evocative layers of dreamy synths, post-rock-infused guitars and a dynamic vocal arrangement.
The interplay between melancholic undertones and invigorating dance-inspired energy epitomises the band’s signature style that resonates throughout the group’s upcoming album.
Featuring their Norwegian collaborators percussionist Ane Marthe Sørlien Holen and violinist Victoria Johnson, ‘Ago’ emerges as Unganisha’s most intricate and textured creations.
‘Ago’ is both an ode to old friendships and a celebration of maintaining a childlike spirit. It is a striking representation of this duality and offers a sneak peek into their musical evolution.
It delves into the intricacies of navigating relationships that change as we grow older and the bittersweet feeling of leaving the past behind. This resonant narrative reflects the challenge of moving beyond nostalgia and resentment to embracing new horizons.
‘Ago’ was recorded in Brageveien Studio in Oslo, Norway. It was produced by Unganisha and mixed by Bernt Isak Wærstad. The track was mastered by Christian Obermayer at Strype Audio in Oslo and released by Anything Goes.
Unganisha recently treated their fans to a sneak peek of the upcoming at their first Kenyan album listening event held at Santuri Studio at The Mall in Nairobi on 8 September. The event was attended by Kenyan artists and music executives, including Coco Em, Sauti Sol’s Fancy Fingers, Blinky Bill and Umoja Sounds.
