Kwesi Amewuga wins Ghana Music Awards Unsung category
Emerging rapper Kwesi Amewuga has won the Unsung category of this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards, securing him a performance slot at the awards show in Accra on 1 June .
Unsung, a contest for upcoming artists, began in February and saw five acts emerge from thousands of social media submissions. The overall winner was selected through public voting.
Amewuga beat fellow nominees Kasar, Lali X Lola, Keeny Ice and Sevenkizs to win the trophy, which was previously held by reggae-dancehall artist DSL. Other winners of the contest include Gambo, Nanky, Teflon Flexx, Kelvyn Boy and Adomaa.
“God bless each and everyone who has been supporting my craft and everyone who voted for me,” Amewuga said. “We have won together. This is just the beginning.”
Born in 1996 and hailing from Sefwi Wiawso in Ghana’s Western North Region, Amewuga’s journey began in high school. He shot to nationwide notice with his viral freestyles, notable among them ‘Prepare’ and ‘Ase3’. His craft is characterised by clever punchlines and an overall comic appeal. He is behind the Young LandGuard EP (2023).
The Ghana Music Awards will commemorate their 25th anniversary this year, honouring outstanding musical accomplishments by Ghanaian artists in genres such as highlife, hiplife, Afropop and traditional music.
This ceremony will be held at the Accra International Conference Centre. Kuami Eugene heads into the awards as the most nominated artist after being shortlisted 18 times, followed by Stonebwoy with 17 nominations and Sarkodie with eight. Last year’s biggest winner, Black Sherif, who converted five of his nominations into victories including Artist of the Year, has also been nominated eight times.
