Lee-Ann van Rooi to host 2021 Business Arts South Africa Awards
South African actress Lee-Ann van Rooi will host the 2021 Business Arts South Africa (BASA) Awards on 30 August, which will feature performances from Jitsvinger, The One Who Sings (Zolani Mahola) and Native Young.
The event seeks to shine a spotlight on partnerships with organisations that have made a positive impact through their projects. It is also designed to celebrate creative mediums including music, visual arts, dance, theatre, architecture, physical performance, fashion and design, as well as any other form of art, culture and creativity.
“While the key focus of the awards has always been to celebrate, recognise and reward, we have always ensured that we also create a space that enables and amplifies by showcasing our rich contemporary creative landscape as well as our rich artistic heritage,” BASA acting head of marketing Sinenhlanhla Mdiya said.
“Last year, the awards went online for the first time and we took the opportunity to showcase a range of creative spaces in Johannesburg. This year, we are pleased to announce that former BASA supporting grant recipient, Iziko Museums of South Africa, has come on board as our lead location partner for this year’s online experience of the awards.”
Van Rooi’s credits stretch across various mediums such as film, TV, stage, puppetry, academics and radio. Her 26 years in the industry have not only brought her critical acclaim but also cemented her as one of South Africa’s most iconic storytellers. In 2015, she founded Bossikop Productions, which endeavours to flip the existing narrative and improve the representation of people of colour, especially women.
Meanwhile, the BASA Awards in July announced the finalists in seven categories for the 2021 edition. The awards ceremony can be viewed on YouTube and BASA's website.
