The legends Victor Olaiya and Keziah Jones headline Afropolitan Concert
Report on proposed performance by Highlife legend Victor Olaiya and Rock Superstar, Keziah Jones, at monthly Afropolitan Concert, in Lagos.
The December edition of the monthly Afropolitan Concert series, hosted in the breezy quaint surroundings of Freedom Park, the former Colonial Prison (now a Museum and events centre) hosts probably, its most star-studded line-up this month. Quite simply, Ade Bantu and Abby Ogunsanya, the brains behind, the now epic event, pulled off a major coup by procuring for this months performance, two of Nigeria's greatest musical legends- the Highlife King, "Sir" Victor Olaiya and "Rugged International" himself, Funk-Rock star, Keziah Jones.
Olaiya, with a 60 plus year career, is quite rightly regarded as one of the fathers of Nigerian Highlife, in fact one of the last surviving icons of the genre, with mega-hits, like "Omo pupa", "December 12", even pre-dating the existence of Nigeria and more recent vintage hits like "Ilu le" and "Mofe mu oyan", defining the sound-track of the lives of at least two generations of Nigerians. Now well into his 80's the legend maintains a touring schedule that would test several of his younger compatriots, but which he seemingly feeds off, growing stronger as the years pas by.
Keziah Jones (real name Olufemi Sanyaolu) on the other hand has built a global fan-base, spawned in the wake of International hits like "Rhythm is love", "Million Miles", "Black Orpheus" etc. This ferociously talented, socially conscious, Singer-Songwriter and Guitarist, has in a career spanning over 22 years, continued to break down creative barriers, re-inventing himself continually in complex cycles - only "Captain Rugged" can understand and of which the rest of the world can only stand in awe.
The event shall also feature young Nigerian talents like singer Kaline, BOJ, POE and of course the incredibly talented standing Band, Bantu, fronted by Ade Bantu himself. As usual, the organisers promise, cool breeze, from the outlying Lagos lagoon and fresh Palmwine, sourced from the trees of the town of Badagry. This is one event music lovers from across the genres and generations, can simply not afford to miss.
The event is scheduled to hold at 7pm tonight,19 December 2014, on the main stage at Freedom Park
