Malawi: Nigeria’s Magixx joins UMP Festival headliners
Nigerian singer-songwriter Magixx will headline the 2024 edition of Urban Music People (UMP) Festival which will take place in Cape Maclear, Malawi, from 25 to 28 October.
He joins South Africa-based Malawian musician Onesimus and performances by other acts like Zinhle Madela (South Africa), Raven Duchess (Zimbabwe), Muhonja (Kenya), Remnants (Zambia), Ntuja (South Africa), Maveriq Mavo (South Africa), The Ells (Namibia), Faray the Great (Zimbabwe), Okie Worldwide (Tanzania), Naimah (South Africa) and ÀNESI (Nigeria), among others.
“We are beyond excited to have Magixx on board,” UMP Festival director Ken Zizwa said. “It's a great alignment as both UMP Festival and Magixx are in our blowing-up phase. This collaboration promises an electrifying experience for our audience.”
Aside from music, the event will feature spoken word, theatre, fine art, fashion designing, filmmaking and dance.
Magixx's musical journey began at age 10, singing in his church choir. Years later, while struggling to fund studio sessions in university, he released his debut single 'Problem' in 2019, showcasing his experimental sound. His breakthrough came in September 2021 when he signed with Mavin Records and released his self-titled debut EP. Building momentum, he collaborated with Ayra Starr on 'Love Don't Cost a Dime' in February 2022, which peaked at number 8 on the TurnTable Top 50 chart.
In July 2022, Magixx unveiled 'Shaye', the lead single from his sophomore EP ATOM, which dropped in July to widespread critical acclaim. Kicking off 2023, Magixx released a two-track pack featuring 'Colors (My Baby)' and 'Loyal'. He continued his streak with the August release of 'Maria'.
