Nigerian rapper appointed Ogun State youth ambassador
Rapper and reality show star Laycon has been appointed as a youth ambassador for the southeastern Nigerian state of Ogun. He was named by state governor Dapo Abiodun, who received the musician in his office in the state capital Abeokuta on 6 October.
“Laycon displayed the essence of focus in the face of temptations and provocations,” Abiodun said of the artist's conduct in the fifth season of Big Brother Naija, the just-ended reality show that the musician won. “This is the true Ogun State spirit and it indeed confirms that this earned him his academic achievement at the University of Lagos."
“Entertainment and academics mix finely for a good result,” Abiodun added, urging parents to allow their children “explore outside the classroom.” He said his team was “finalising plans to establish in Ogun State an entertainment village for artists to nurture their skills and talents.”
Accepting his new mandate, Laycon expressed appreciation to the governor and citizens of Ogun for their support during his time in the Big Brother house. He also expressed gratitude for his new appointment, stressing his keenness to impact society positively with his new role.
Laycon's appointment comes with a three-bedroom bungalow and a cash sum of ₦5m (about $13 000). It also makes him a member of the Ogun State executive council. Laycon is expected to serve as a role model for young people in the region. He was charged with the duty of inspiring them to apply themselves positively and abstain from social vices.
Laycon’s first official assignment was reportedly to meet with the Ogun State commissioner of police to discuss a number of issues, chief among them police brutality and community policing.
