SA: Apple Music releases Afrikaans charts

Local rapper Snotkop is ranked No 1 in the Top Afrikaans Artist category. His single ‘Cool Soos Koos Kombuis’ (Cool Like Koos Kombuis) has also grabbed first spot in the Top Afrikaans Songs category.

Jo Black’s Skepe emerged tops in the Top Afrikaans Albums followed by Snotkop’s HKGK.

Other artists in the Apple Music charts include Karen Zoid, Elandre, Robbie Wessels and Kurt Darren. Top playlists range from Afrikaanse Treffers and Afrikaans Alternatief Essentials to Afrikaanse Sokkie Essentials.

The Afrikaans music industry, which is known for its alternative, hip hop and contemporary folk genres, is one of South Africa's biggest, despite the fact that the language is spoken by about 13.5% of people in the country. The scene boasts its own music awards, private TV channels and festivals catering for hundreds of thousands of Afrikaans speakers.
