SA: Goethe-Institut, Animation SA to host Cav' Platform dialogue in Durban
Goethe-Institut, in collaboration with Animation South Africa, will host the second edition of its Cav' Platform Dialogue Forums at Elangeni Hotel in Durban, South Africa, on 22 July.
The series, whose first instalment was held in Johannesburg in April, will be held under the banner Incubators and Creative Clusters as Models for the Transformation of the Audio-visual Industry. It aims to develop dialogue forums focused on topics relevant to the animation industry, and forms part of the programming of various South African festivals with an interest in animation.
The dialogue will be moderated by Isabelle Rorke and feature experts in incubation, creative clusters and ecosystems strategy, including Levinia Jones, Leoti Taylor and Xolile Vundla.
“The expert speakers will discuss and share knowledge about the value of creative clusters and incubators,” Cav' Platform project manager Bandile Gumbi told Music In Africa. “This is based on the understanding that collaboration and resource sharing has the potential to accelerate the development of the creative industries in resource-scarce contexts such as ours.
“This will be an opportunity for the audio-visual industries – which includes animation, live-action and other related sectors – to gain knowledge on how creative clusters and incubators operate, how they as creatives and studios can engage with them and also possibly start creating them for their own benefit.”
Each dialogue forum is based on the theme and research findings of the transformation requirements within the animation industry. The third instalment of the event will be held at the Cape Town International Animation Festival CTIAF in August. The Cape Town forum will cover the latest trends and opportunities in licensing and merchandising for the animation community.
The Cav' Platform was established in 2019 with a focus on curated content relevant to the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) in South Africa. It makes part of a CCI global project initiated in six countries by Goethe-Institut in partnership with the German Development Agency.
