SA house kingpin Bojo Mujo dies

According to reports, Bojo Mujo, whose real name was Jacky Lehlake, passed on at 5am in Pretoria, surrounded by family and friends. There was still little information about the nature of his illness or how long he had been ill for, but there is speculation that the DJ’s disappearance from the public domain in recent times may have much to do with his illness.

According to a statement issued by his manager, Sello Lehlake, "Bojo Mujo’s first love was to make people dance. Although he is no longer with us, his music will live among his fans forever.”

Lehlake added that even though he was not going to be around, his music would live on among his fans forever.

Born in Modimole, Limpopo, Bojo was best known for his 2006 hit ‘Summer Rain’ with DJ Cleo, ‘Hlonolofatsa’ (2008) and ‘Thando Lwami’ (2011), among others.

Since his debut album Shiwelele in 2003 and thanks to his popular House Therapy series of albums, Bojo Mujo enjoyed huge sales in Southern Africa, reportedly of over half a million. Although never quite a household name at home, Bojo’s music had taken him as far afield as tours of Australia and the UK. He was also a popular figure in Botswana and Swaziland, where he performed as recently as Christmas Eve in 2014.

Since 2006 he ran his own recording studio, called Bojolution, where he recorded artists such as Biblos, Moneymaker, Tea Kay and Maeli.

He is survived by a son, Koketso.
